Gin Rummy Scoring System
Understanding how points are calculated and games are won
Basic Scoring Principles
Gin Rummy scoring is based on the difference in deadwood points between players at the end of each hand. Deadwood refers to cards that are not part of any meld (set or run).
The goal is to minimize your deadwood while maximizing your opponent's. Points are awarded based on the difference between players' deadwood values and any bonuses earned.
Card Point Values
Each card in Gin Rummy has a specific point value that counts toward deadwood:

| 2 through 10 | Face value (2-10 points) |
| Face cards (J, Q, K) | 10 points each |
For example, a hand with a 5 of hearts, 8 of clubs, and King of diamonds as deadwood would count as 5 + 8 + 10 = 23 points of deadwood.
Scoring Scenarios
Going Gin
When a player forms their entire hand into melds with no deadwood and declares "Gin":
- They receive a bonus of 25 points
- Plus the value of their opponent's deadwood
Knocking
When a player has 10 or fewer points of deadwood and knocks:
- The opponent may lay off their deadwood cards onto the knocker's melds
- If the knocker has less deadwood after lay-offs, they score the difference in deadwood points
- If the opponent has equal or less deadwood after lay-offs, they score the difference plus a 25-point undercut bonus
Example Calculation
Player A knocks with 8 points of deadwood. Player B has 20 points of deadwood but can lay off 5 points onto Player A's melds, reducing their deadwood to 15 points. Player A wins and scores 15 - 8 = 7 points.
Game Scoring
A complete game of Gin Rummy typically continues until one player reaches an agreed-upon target score, often 100 or 150 points.
Line Bonuses
In addition to hand scoring, players can earn bonuses for winning consecutive hands:
- Box Bonus: 25 points for winning the game
- Line Bonus: 25 points for each hand won in a row
These bonuses add strategic depth, as players might adjust their risk tolerance based on the current score and line bonuses at stake.
Scoring Tips
To maximize your score in Gin Rummy:
- Consider knocking early when you have a significant lead in deadwood points
- When behind, it might be worth pursuing Gin for the 25-point bonus
- Keep track of high-value cards (face cards) to minimize deadwood
- Remember that preventing your opponent from scoring can be as valuable as scoring yourself
